Harbourside Walkers is a sports club located in Sydney that promotes the benefits of walking for a healthier heart and overall wellbeing. Organised by Andrea, the club meets every Thursday at 7:00 am for a walk along the beautiful harbourside.
The club has a total of 32 members and maintains a medium pace during their walks. The duration of each walk typically ranges from 30 to 45 minutes. Unfortunately, dogs and prams/wheelchairs are not permitted during the walks. The meeting point for the club is the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre, located at 16 Fitzroy St, Kirribilli, 2060.
The main goal of Harbourside Walkers is to build connexions within the community while working towards a healthier heart. Walking for an average of 30 minutes a day can significantly lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes by 30 to 40 percent. In addition, regular walking has been proven to manage weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of certain cancers, and improve balance and coordination, reducing the risk of falls and injuries.
Harbourside Walkers also offers a free Personal Walking Plan that can help individuals feel healthier and happier in just six weeks. The club encourages healthcare professionals to refer their patients to their structured and supportive walking programme, which complements the care provided by professionals. Whether participants prefer walking alone or in a group, the programme is designed to help individuals meet national physical activity guidelines.
One member of Harbourside Walkers, Maria, shared her inspiring story of how walking significantly improved her health. After being overweight for over 40 years and developing diabetes and blood pressure problems, Maria started walking up to 5,000 steps a day. Over time, she gradually increased her daily step count to 15,000 steps, and as a result, her diabetes disappeared and her blood pressure normalised. Maria emphasised the positive impact that walking had on her mental and physical health.

The club is proudly supported by the National Heart Foundation of Australia, which acknowledges and pays respect to the Traditional Owners and custodians of the land.
