Harrogate Flyfishers' Club, established way back in 1887, is deeply rooted in the heart of Yorkshire. Alan, one of the longstanding members, invites anglers to experience a slice of fishing history in the charming village of Darley, just eight miles from Harrogate. With exclusive access to four splendid miles of the River Nidd, the club offers year-round fishing adventures. Spring and summer are perfect for trout, and autumn and winter bring fantastic grayling fishing.
The river teems with wild trout and grayling, thriving amidst the diverse surroundings of runs, glides, and islands. Plus, with reciprocal arrangements with three other clubs, members can fish in some of the best lakes, becks, and rivers across North Yorkshire.
Alan emphasises the importance of community spirit, encouraging members to join regular working parties to keep the fishery in top shape. The club, with its fifty-five passionate members, maintains a welcoming atmosphere. The waiting list is short, so interested anglers should definitely give it a go. The annual fee is 240, with an entrance fee of 150.
The trout season runs from March 25th to the end of September, exclusively for fly-fishing, while grayling fishing continues until the end of February with both fly and bait techniques.
Anglers are advised to bring waders and a strong wading stick for safety, given the river's rocky bottom. For optimal fishing, rods longer than nine feet and lines heavier than a five weight are unnecessary. Traditional flies like March Brown, Iron Blue Dun, and Greenwells Glory work wonders, especially during the prolific Mayfly hatch in early June.
