Hawkins Field, located in Balingup, Western Australia, is a soccer field that serves as the home ground for the Blackwood United Football Club (BUFC). Established in 2002 by Amanda and Steve Hawkins, the club was created to provide a soccer club for the Balingup region.
Initially, lessons were taught at Balingup Primary School and soon expanded to after-school sessions on the school oval. The interest in soccer quickly grew, attracting parents and children from nearby schools in Greenbushes, Kirup, and Bridgetown. Due to the increasing numbers, a larger venue was needed, and the decision was made to utilise the local town oval, despite its poor condition after not being used for sporting purposes for almost 30 years. Another option considered was the nearby oval in Greenbushes.
In 2002, the Balingup Soccer Club was formed and teams were registered in the Lower South West Soccer League (LSWSL) for the 2002/03 season. During this time, a committee was established, and a constitution was written to guide the club. With the assistance of dedicated individuals such as Tony and Jackie Hawkins and Vikki and Steve Thompson, the club developed a strong ethos that remained intact throughout the years.
Blackwood United Football Club has always been fortunate to have willing volunteers who have contributed to its success. The early seasons saw coaches, managers, canteen staff, kit washers, and orange cutters readily helping out. The commitment and dedication of these individuals have been instrumental in building the club's foundations.
Blackwood United Football Club's home ground is Hawkins Field, located at Balingup Oval on Walter Road in Balingup. The oval is situated behind the Recreation Centre and Bowling Green on the South West Highway. The club's postal address is PO Box 260, Balingup, WA 6253.
Hosting and attending carnivals have been an essential part of Blackwood United Football Club's activities since its establishment. The club recognises the value of these events in developing friendships and fostering community connexions. The club has hosted numerous tournaments, including the Blackwood Senior 5 a side carnival from 2011 to 2016.
Overall, Hawkins Field at Balingup Oval is a vibrant and welcoming soccer field that serves as the home ground for Blackwood United Football Club. The dedication of the Hawkins family and the enthusiastic support of volunteers have shaped the club's history and continue to contribute to its success.
