About Janet Janet Portbury has been running Hilltop Riding School for 50 years, providing qualified British Horse Society (BHS) instruction in a small and friendly atmosphere. With her wealth of experience and expertise, she ensures that all students receive high-quality instruction and care. Hilltop Riding School is licenced by the Exeter City Council, with licence number RE04.

At Hilltop Riding School, we take pride in our lovely horses and ponies that are suitable for all ages and riding standards. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, we have the perfect horse or pony for you. We believe in fostering a love for horses and in creating a safe and supportive environment for all riders.

Our lessons take place in our safe and all-weather outdoor school, where our “schoolmaster” ponies and horses are willing and well-schooled. We offer private and group lessons, both half-hour and hour-long, for children and adults. Discounts are available for those who book a block of six half-hour lessons in advance.

For those who crave adventure, escorted hacks are available upon request. Enjoy riding through beautiful country lanes, bridleways, fields, and woodlands, with the ability to choose your own pace – take it easy or go for a gallop.

Safety is our top priority at Hilltop Riding School. All riders must wear hats that meet the PAS O15 or BSEB1384 standard, and hats are available to hire for 1. We ensure that all riders understand the risks involved in riding and follow our safety rules to maintain a safe riding environment.

In addition to riding lessons and hacks, we also offer special activities throughout the year, such as pony days, gymkhanas, clear round jumping, summer BBQs, and long day rides. These events provide a fun and engaging way for riders to further hone their skills and develop confidence in their riding abilities.
