Historic Equitation Ltd, based in Kettering, is a renowned association and horse riding school dedicated to preserving and celebrating the art of horsemanship. Led by Dominic Sewell, a highly skilled horse trainer and rider, Historic Equitation offers a wide range of services and experiences focusing on classical methods and historical equestrianism.
Dominic's passion for knights and war horses dates back to his childhood in Barnard Castle, where his love for the mediaeval period first took root. In 1996, he co-founded 'Destrier,' Europe's foremost calvary re-enactment group, alongside like-minded individuals. This experience fueled Dominic's desire to delve deeper into the ancient art of horsemanship.
With the guidance and encouragement of TV star Mike Loades, Dominic embarked on international jousting competitions and has been recognised as one of the top exponents of the sport. However, Dominic's interests go beyond jousting and mounted combat. He is a devoted student of historical haute cole horsemanship, particularly from the Sixteenth, Seventeenth, and Eighteenth Centuries.
One of Historic Equitation's notable projects includes collaborating with English Heritage to highlight the classical teaching methods of William Cavendish, the Duke of Newcastle, England's most famous riding master, at Bolsover Castle's riding house. This collaboration showcases Dominic's commitment to promoting and preserving the rich heritage of horsemanship.
In response to the challenges faced in 2020, Historic Equitation has expanded its services to include training for both horses and riders. Horses are trained and schooled according to classical methods at their headquarters in Sudborough, while Dominic also offers on-site visits to clients' yards. This flexibility ensures that horse owners can benefit from Dominic's expertise and guidance regardless of their location.
One of the core services offered by Historic Equitation is private tuition conducted by Dominic Sewell himself. By employing the timeless teachings of the Dressage Masters, riders of all levels can enhance their skills and deepen their bond with their equine partners. Whether you are a novice rider or an experienced equestrian, Dominic's lessons cater to individual needs and harness the wisdom of past equestrian masters.
The purpose-built facilities at Historic Equitation provide an ideal environment for both horse and rider. The riding house, or indoor school, and the outdoor all-weather tilt rail ensure that training can take place regardless of weather conditions. The premises also offer ample day stables with automatic water, overnight stabling options, and hardstanding for lorries or horseboxes. These facilities are fully insured and compliant with licencing requirements, ensuring the utmost safety and comfort for all horses and riders.
Whether you are interested in learning classical horsemanship, participating in jousts, film and TV productions, mounted falconry, or photoshoots, Historic Equitation offers a unique and immersive experience. With a deep respect for history and an unwavering commitment to horses' welfare, Historic Equitation is a leading institution dedicated to preserving and promoting the ancient art of horsemanship.
