Not promote aggression but rather develops a deeper understanding and control of one's own energy. At the Hull Aikido Club, we recognise the importance of Aiki-Kobudo (weapons training) in the study of Aikido, and devote one full session per week to this practise.
Our club was established in 1995 by Patrick and Steve Allen, following the passing of Sensei Alan Pirie. The purpose was to continue training in the style and methods developed by Sensei Pirie throughout his life. In our training, we focus on Kihon (technique) not only as a means of self-defence but also as a way to understand and develop Ki (spirit). We believe in learning from each other as we train, and many of our Aikido techniques are derived from and related to weapons training.
In line with the philosophy of Aikido, there are no contests or competitions at our club. Instead, our training primarily revolves around Kata and Wasa form, where the attacker and defender work together to develop and learn from each other. We strive to use real attacks whenever possible in order to effectively prepare for self-defence situations. Our ultimate goal is to train and enjoy the journey along the path of Aikido.
The Hull Aikido Club welcomes students from all walks of life, and our dojo is known for its friendly atmosphere filled with enthusiasm for the art. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced practitioner, you are invited to join us on Mondays at 7pm for a training session. Our instructors will do their best to ensure that you have an enjoyable experience.
In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we have implemented a comprehensive risk assessment and use track and trace to record the details of individuals attending sessions during the restrictions. We highly recommend keeping an eye on our social media channels for up-to-date information and any changes in our training schedule.
Aikido, the “Way of unifying (with) life energy” or “the Way of harmonious spirit,” is a beautiful Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba. Ueshiba's vision was to create an art that would allow practitioners to defend themselves while also protecting their attackers from harm. Aikido is based on blending with the attacker's motion and redirecting their force rather than opposing it directly. This requires minimal physical strength, as the aikidka leads the attacker's momentum using entering and turning movements, ultimately executing various throws and joint locks.
Today, Aikido is practised all over the world in various styles, each with its own interpretation and emphasis. However, they all share the techniques learned from Ueshiba and prioritise the well-being of the attacker.
At the Hull Aikido Club, we are proud to carry on the legacy of Sensei Alan Pirie and continue training in his style and methods. Join us in the study of Aikido and Aiki-Kobudo, and discover the profound benefits of harmonising with energy, self-defence, and personal growth.
