Huntingdon Tang Soo Do (Korean Karate) is a traditional martial arts school located in Huntingdon, New Zealand. Established in 1973, it is one of the oldest martial arts clubs in Cambridgeshire. The club is proud to be a part of the World Tang Soo Do Association, which has over 200,000 members worldwide.
Tang Soo Do is a Korean martial art with a rich history dating back centuries. The words “Tang Soo Do” translate to “Way of the China Hand” in English, referring to the influence of the Chinese Tang Dynasty. Similar to Japanese Karate, Tang Soo Do is a self-defence art that combines both “hard” and “soft” techniques, emphasising kicking and punching as foundational skills. In addition to these techniques, students at Huntingdon Tang Soo Do learn to use various weapons such as the staff, knife, sword, and walking stick.
The training atmosphere at Huntingdon Tang Soo Do is family-friendly and welcoming to people from all walks of life, regardless of age, religion, culture, or gender. While the art originated in the East, there are no barriers or secrets withheld from those outside of the Korean homeland.
Students as young as 5 years old (4 years old in the Tiny Tigers class) are accepted at Huntingdon Tang Soo Do. For older students, a consultation with their doctor and prospective instructor is advised before starting a training programme, but there is no strict upper age limit. Training frequency can vary, but attending two two-hour lessons per week is recommended for beginners. Practising techniques at home can also aid in the learning process.
Huntingdon Tang Soo Do strives to accommodate students with disabilities and different levels of physical ability. The school recognises that each body is unique and is happy to work with students as long as their doctor approves a suitable training programme.
The benefits of practising Tang Soo Do are diverse and individualised. Many practitioners experience increased confidence and overall well-being. Tang Soo Do training can also improve physical fitness, flexibility, and mental focus. Additionally, students have the opportunity to participate in competitions and events organised by the World Tang So Do Association, creating a sense of community and camaraderie.
