IKGA Yamaguchi School of Karate, located in the Gold Coast, is a sports club that offers high-quality instruction in the art of Gojuryu Karatedo. The club is affiliated with the International Karatedo Gojukai Association (IKGA), an international organisation founded by the late Grand Master Gogen Yamaguchi to promote and share the practise of Gojuryu Karatedo worldwide.
Under the leadership of Grand Master Goshi Yamaguchi, son of Gogen Yamaguchi, IKGA has flourished with thousands of members across Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America, and Oceania. The Gold Coast branch of IKGA provides a welcoming and supportive environment for individuals of all ages and skill levels who wish to explore and master the art of Gojuryu Karatedo.
The club offers regular training sessions led by experienced and knowledgeable instructors, including visits from Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi himself, who travels to different regions to teach the highest level of Gojuryu Karatedo to instructors and members. Additionally, members from all regions that teach IKGA Karate are welcome to visit the headquarters, located in Japan, to further enrich their training experience.
In light of the recent challenges posed by the global pandemic, IKGA Yamaguchi School of Karate has embraced technology to ensure the continuity of training and the sharing of knowledge. The club has an official YouTube channel where members can access instructional videos, demonstrations, and other valuable resources to continue their karate journey even in the absence of in-person gatherings.
One of the highlights of IKGA is the IKGA Global Championships, held every four years, which brings together IKGA countries for friendly competition and goodwill. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the upcoming championships in Tokyo have been postponed until further notice, ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants.
The club is deeply rooted in tradition and pays homage to its founder, Master Miyagi Chojun, who passed away 70 years ago. In honour of his memory, IKGA Yamaguchi School of Karate organises events and tournaments that celebrate his legacy and contributions to the art of Gojuryu Karatedo.
The club also actively participates in international seminars and championships. Recently, IKGA South American Block Championships and seminar were held in Argentina, featuring an online component taught by Saiko Shihan Goshi Yamaguchi himself. Similarly, IKGA North American Block hosted an online seminar for brown and black belt members, providing valuable opportunities for growth and learning within the karate community.
