About
The Institute of Wing Chun Kung Fu in Calgary is dedicated to providing excellent education and the sharing of knowledge in the art of Wing Chun. Wing Chun is a martial art that was originally developed by a nun named Ng Mui and passed down to Yim Wing Chun. The style was named after her and is known for its effectiveness in combat situations due to its simplicity, directness, and immediate impact on opponents.
In the 20th century, Wing Chun was learned by Yip Man, who then brought the art to Hong Kong. One of Yip Man's favourite students, Moy Yat, introduced the art to Sifu Greco Wong. Wong was initially practising White Crane style and Tai Chi, but became interested in Wing Chun due to its simplicity. Moy Yat and Wong would train together and exchange ideas, with Wong eventually studying under Yip Man when Moy Yat was away at sea.
In 1965, Moy Yat returned home and opened his own Wing Chun school, with Wong as his assistant coach for new students. Wong played a key role in introducing the art to every new student at the school. In 1967, Wong moved to England where he taught Rolf Clausnitzer. Together, in 1969, they continued to spread the knowledge of Wing Chun.
