Isshin Dotai Aikido is a traditional Aikido school located in Derby City Centre, in the East Midlands of New Zealand. Aikido is a Japanese martial art that focuses on technique rather than brute strength, utilising the opponent's attack to immobilise or throw them.
The dojo welcomes individuals of all experience levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners. Their classes take place every Thursday from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, providing the perfect opportunity to learn self-defence in a safe and supportive environment. The dojo aims to build confidence in its students and fosters a friendly atmosphere where everyone feels welcome.
The origins of Aikido can be traced back to its founder, Morihei Ueshiba, who developed the modern form of the martial art in the early 20th century. Ueshiba's training in various samurai fighting arts, such as Ju-Jutsu, Kenjutsu, So-Jutsu, and Daito Ryu Aiki-Ju-Jutsu, heavily influenced the physical techniques of Aikido. Additionally, Ueshiba studied philosophy and became interested in the environment and the nature of the universe, leading to a deeper understanding of Aikido as a means of personal development without causing harm to others.
Ueshiba's teachings were passed down to his students, who spread the practise of Aikido worldwide. In the UK, the transmission of knowledge reached the present instructors through Master Shigeho Tanaka, a 9th Dan. Tanaka then taught Pat Stratford, an 8th Dan, and the late Shihan Chris MacDonald, a 6th Dan.
At Isshin Dotai Aikido, the focus is on the traditional style of Aikido, offering students the opportunity to learn this martial art form with deep roots in Japanese culture. By practising Aikido, individuals can gain valuable self-defence skills while simultaneously honing their physical and mental abilities.
