The Jean Inwards School of Dance, located in Feltham, has been a reputable dance school in the community since its establishment in 1953. Founded by Jean Inwards herself, the school has grown from a small group of eleven dedicated students to now cater to an average of 150 to 160 pupils.
Jean Inwards became a teacher when her own mentor, Lillian Rowley, handed over her dance school at the London Academy. Jean took over several of the pupils and gradually built a strong foundation for the Jean Inwards School of Dance. She obtained her teachers' membership of the British Arts Association and continued her training with Ruth French to achieve her Associate I. S.
T. D. membership in ballet.
The primary aim of the school has always been to provide enjoyable dance classes for individuals aged 3 and above, with no upper age limit. The school prides itself on fostering a friendly atmosphere where students can discover the joys of dance. The close-knit nature of the school has led to many long-lasting friendships amongst the students and their parents.
To make it more convenient and cost-effective for parents, the school offers combined classes that include tap, ballet, and other disciplines. This approach has been maintained throughout the years, with additional practises arranged whenever necessary. The current teachers, who share a genuine love for dance, have all received a significant portion of their training from the Jean Inwards School of Dance. This continuity ensures smooth-running classes and enables former pupils, who are now parents or grandparents, to entrust their own children to the school.
Many of the school's students have had the opportunity to appear in professional shows such as Annie, Sound of Music, We Will Rock You, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Fame, Saturday Night Fever, and Spamalot, amongst others. Some have even made appearances on television, in pantomimes, made records, worked in holiday camps, cruise liners, and have established their own dance schools or teach at others. Additionally, several students have graduated to Performing Arts Colleges, a testament to the school's dedication to nurturing talent.
The Jean Inwards School of Dance regularly enters its students for The British Arts Association Exams, achieving success each year in the prestigious British Arts Awards Contest. The school has been awarded 'The Best Display' on numerous occasions. In addition, the school organises a bi-annual 'Own Choreography' competition for its pupils.
Over the years, the school has evolved in terms of performance venues. From humble church halls and small venues, it has graduated to the Commonwealth Theatre and the Beck Theatre in Hayes, and now performs at the Hammond Theatre in Hampton. The proceeds from these displays have allowed the school to donate substantial amounts to various children's charities, a source of immense pride for the institution.
The Jean Inwards School of Dance hopes that its students will continue to enjoy their lessons and be a part of the school's community for many years to come. With a dedicated teaching team led by Principal Jean Bridle, the school provides a welcoming environment for students to explore their passion for dance. The school also offers a range of dance styles, including ballet, tap, and jazz, with qualified instructors who share their expertise and love for the art form.
