Welcome to the website of John G. Fleming Bowling Club. Mike, the organiser, has designed this platform to provide members with up-to-date information on club activities and to offer guests an insight into the club’s atmosphere. Regardless of your skill level, everyone is invited to join the facilities, which feature an excellent bowling surface and a lively clubhouse.
The club is named after John G. Fleming, who funded the bowling green and clubhouse. The club was established during Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1898. On July 2nd that year, John Gilmour Fleming and his sister, Miss Fleming, inaugurated the green in the village of Houston with a celebration attended by local clergy and Provost McKenzie of Paisley. Mr. Roxburgh, a Paisley elocutionist, entertained the audience.
The first club championship took place in 1906, with John Buchanan winning. John G. Fleming awarded him a gold medal, which Buchanan later donated to the club as the President's Badge in 1970. The ladies section began in 1939 and achieved full membership status in 1995.
Members participate in the Johnstone and District Leagues and various national and regional tournaments. Highlights include the Ladies Triples team winning the Scottish Triples Championship in 2010 and Alan Whyte and William McGregor securing the Scottish Pairs Title in 1961 and the British Isles Pairs Championship in 1962.
The clubhouse has evolved, with the hall, opened in 1992, serving as a venue for indoor bowling and social events. In 2008, the club converted to a Community Club to protect its facilities for future generations, aligning with John G. Fleming's original vision.
New members are always welcome, no matter their experience level. Join the John G. Fleming Bowling Club and become part of its vibrant community.
