Junior Surf at New Brighton Surf Life Saving Club is the place to be if you're looking to have a blast, meet new friends, and learn valuable beach safety skills. This awesome program is open to everyone, regardless of age or ability.
Every Sunday from 10am to 12pm, the club hosts the main training day for Junior Surf. It's important to arrive on time to sign in and get ready for the fun ahead. The session kicks off with a briefing on the day's plan, followed by a beach warm-up. We then split the participants into three age groups for a group warm-up activity.
During the session, we divide into three age groups and engage in various activities both on the sand and in the water. On the beach, we have exciting sprints, relays, and beach flags competitions. In the water, we focus on building board and surf skills, water confidence, and awareness. The little ones get to use boogie boards while the older kids tackle the waves with rescue boards. And for those who may not feel up for the water just yet, we spend some time getting them acquainted with it.
Safety is our number one priority, so you can rest assured that there will be plenty of lifeguards making sure everyone is safe and sound. As the clock strikes 12pm, we kindly ask everyone to return their hi-vis vests, sign out of the swim register, get changed, and join us for a delicious sausage from the BBQ. Yum!
If you're 9 years old or older, you also have the opportunity to earn the 200m Safety Badge. This badge showcases your confidence in swimming back to shore in case you lose your board and is a requirement for those interested in competing in water events at carnivals.
Now, let's talk fees. For the 2023/2024 Summer Season, the cost for participants under 14 years old is $70 for a single child, $40 for a second child in the same family, and $20 for children under 7 years old. We accept cash, EFTPOS on club days, or payments via internet banking.
But that's not all! We also offer the Rookie Lifeguard Programme. This program is specifically designed to help our junior surf members prepare to become Surf Lifeguards themselves. We want to promote practical lifeguarding skills and foster strong connections between our senior and junior members. It's perfect for 13-year-old junior surf members who have their sights set on becoming Surf Lifeguards in the upcoming season.
