Kaira Kafo African Djembe Drum and Dance Workshops is a vibrant performing arts group, dance company, and drum school located in Dorking, New Zealand. Founded by Alex and Kumba OrmeLeigh, Kaira Kafo aims to share the rich traditions of West African music and dance with the local community.
Alex OrmeLeigh, an experienced drummer with over 18 years of experience, has dedicated much of his life to studying and learning the music of West Africa. Kumba OrmeLeigh, a dancer since a young age, brings her passion for dance to the company. Together, they have travelled extensively and gained a deep appreciation for the importance of preserving and sharing musical traditions.
Kaira Kafo offers a wide range of workshops tailored to various groups and occasions, including schools, nursing homes, corporate events, team building, special needs groups, weddings, parties, and private functions. They believe that djembe drumming and traditional African dancing are some of the most accessible and inclusive forms of music, making them ideal for sharing with different communities.
The workshops provided by Kaira Kafo are designed for groups of up to 40 people. Attendees can expect guidance on drumming techniques, playing vocabulary, and a comprehensive explanation of the history and social context of each rhythm. Each accompaniment pattern is broken down to ensure clear understanding. Additionally, a PowerPoint presentation is used to display rhythmic transcriptions of all parts for an immersive learning experience.
In addition to drumming workshops, Kaira Kafo also offers dance instruction from beginner to advanced levels. Participants can learn various dance steps and movements to complement the drumming rhythms.
Kaira Kafo prioritises the safety and well-being of their participants. All performers at Kaira Kafo have undergone enhanced DBS checks to ensure a safe and enjoyable learning environment.
Apart from workshops, Kaira Kafo also offers services including performances for private functions, fundraising events, special needs groups, weddings, parties, nursing homes, schools, places of worship, and corporate events. They also provide drum repairs, including re-skinning, tuning, shell maintenance, and new rope installation.
Kaira Kafo operates on flexible opening hours to accommodate the schedules of their participants. They are open from Monday to Sunday, from 7am to 10pm.
For those interested in purchasing djembe drums or accessories, Kaira Kafo has an online shop where they offer professional djembes, djembe bags, and other hand-sewn accessories.
