About

Kindy Karate Melbourne is a high-quality sports club that offers martial arts training for children aged 4 and above. The programme is developed and delivered by Head and Founder, Sensei Sandra, who provides structured classes where children learn genuine Japanese karate. The aim is to help them become proficient in Shitoryu karate movements, eventually working towards achieving their black belt.

At Kindy Karate, the class environment is quiet, but children are encouraged to shout loudly when instructed. Sensei Sandra delivers classes every week, and children are expected to be good listeners, able to follow instructions, and able to focus in order to participate.

What sets Kindy Karate apart from other martial arts schools is their affiliation to the Australian and International peak karate bodies, as well as being government recognised. They specialise in Shitoryu karate, which is one of the four main styles in Japan that provides leadership in competitive sport. All karate classes are delivered by Sensei Sandra herself, ensuring high-quality instruction in a safe environment.

Students at Kindy Karate Melbourne are known for their discipline, confidence, strength, kindness, courage, fitness, and overall good health. For those who show particular talent and dedication, Sensei Sandra offers a path to competition karate. Class sizes are restricted and carefully managed to ensure quality learning, and each class is tailored specifically to the age and level of the children.

Kindy Karate classes are held at a full-time, private venue located at 9 Hunt Street, Coburg. This allows the club to control the environment, ensuring safety, cleanliness, and uninterrupted class time. Onsite parking is available for the convenience of parents and students.

Kindy Karate is an initiative of OKUKAN karate school. OKUKAN has formal relationships with the Australian Karate Federation (AKF), which provides students with access to Junior/Cadet and Senior World Championships. Shitoryu karate has gained recognition worldwide through the activities organised by Japan Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Kai and All Japan Karate-Do Federation Shito-Kai. The World Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Federation was established in 1993, and affiliated organisations from the Asian-Pacific and other regions are associated with this federation.

Kindy Karate follows the Dojo Kun, a code of behaviour for karate practitioners. The five principles of the Shitoryu's Five Way Spirit are determination, never forgetting the spirit of first beginning, morality, respect for others, and refraining from violent behaviour.

Parents and children alike have expressed their positive experiences with Kindy Karate, with one parent saying, “Kindy Karate has been the best activity my daughter has done; she absolutely loves it. She looks forward to each and every week and enjoys practising at home.

Sensei Sandra, the Head, and Founder of Kindy Karate, is an accredited coach with first aid certification and a working with children's check. She also serves as a referee and judge for the AKF and is a former karate champion.
