KW Lightning Girls Basketball Association, based in Waterloo, is a non-profit organization established in 1993 with the goal of developing basketball skills for girls in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. The club fields competitive rep travel teams for girls at all age levels and sponsors other rep teams or clubs. In addition, KW Lightning offers a skill development program for girls in grade 3 and under, along with co-sponsoring a non-competitive house league program.
Founded by Al Haehn, KW Lightning aims to elevate the level of girls' basketball in the region. Many former KW Lightning players have gone on to play basketball at elite and professional levels, showcasing the success of the organization in nurturing talent. The club's executive team, composed entirely of volunteers, oversees the management and direction of the organization to ensure its continued success.
The KW Lightning Tournaments provide teams of all age levels with the opportunity to compete against top players in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. With tournaments scheduled on eight different weekends throughout the season, players can test their skills and abilities in a competitive environment. The club also offers clinics for players looking to enhance their basketball skills and have fun on the court.
For families facing budget restrictions for child sports leagues, KW Lightning will be offering programs free of charge starting in 2017. This initiative aims to make basketball accessible to all interested players in the community. With a dedicated team of volunteers supporting the executive, KW Lightning continues to be a driving force in girls' basketball development in Waterloo.
