Mapleton Bowls Club, located in Mapleton, is delighted to announce an upcoming local Lawn Bowls event that promises to be a thrilling and fun-filled day for all interested players.
For those unfamiliar with the sport, Lawn Bowls involves rolling biased balls towards a smaller ball known as a 'jack' or 'kitty' on a meticulously maintained rectangular bowling green. Our club takes pride in providing a carefully levelled and manicured grass or synthetic surface divided into rinks, creating the perfect setting for this captivating sport.
To kick off the game, opponents begin by strategically placing the mat and rolling the jack to the other end of the green, serving as a target. Each player then takes turns rolling their bowls from the mat towards the jack, aiming to build up the 'head.' It's important to note that bowls must come to rest within the rink boundaries to remain in play. However, any bowls falling into the ditch are promptly removed unless they have had contact with the jack.
Throughout the game, the jack stays in play unless it ventures out of bounds to the side. At the conclusion of each segment, points known as 'shots' are awarded based on the distance of the closest bowls to the jack. With the typical game consisting of twenty-one ends, excitement and anticipation are never in short supply.
One of the remarkable aspects of Lawn Bowls is the friendly and sportsmanlike atmosphere that permeates every match. Players readily acknowledge their opponents' successes and near misses, creating an environment that ensures everyone has an enjoyable experience.
Another distinctive feature of this sport is the specialised bowls used. These bowls possess a deliberate bias, causing them to travel along a curved path. The unique bias is determined by the shape of the bowl, with regulations specifying the minimum allowed bias.
When it comes to identifying bowls, various colours and symbol markings are employed. Stickers or labels are often used to distinguish the bowls of each team during matches, with specific colours frequently assigned to clubs within a particular area.
Whether you're an experienced Lawn Bowls player or a novice eager to try something new, this event is open to individuals of all ages and skill levels. It's a fantastic opportunity to engage in a popular and enjoyable sport, while also relishing the camaraderie that accompanies each game.
So, mark your calendars and join Mapleton Bowls Club for a incredible day of friendly competition and skilful shots at our local Lawn Bowls event. We look forward to seeing you there!
