London Aikikai has a rich history, dating back to its founding in 1968 by T K Chiba Shihan, an 8th Dan Aikikai. The school is officially recognised by Aikido World Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan and is a member of both the British Aikikai and the Joint Aikikai Council of Great Britain (JAC). It was the headquarters dojo of the Aikikai of Great Britain under T K Chiba Shihan when it was located in Chiswick, West London. Throughout the years, the dojo has evolved and changed names, eventually becoming known as Shinmei-kan Dojo.
It has maintained close ties with Chiba Shihan through regular exchange visits and was the largest dojo within British Birankai (British Aikikai) before his passing in 2015.
In addition to training, London Aikikai also celebrates Japanese culture through events such as Japan Matsuri. The school was a part of the 10th Anniversary festival of Japan Matsuri in 2019 and has participated in various other events in the past.
Aikido is an art that was born out of the changing times in Japan, where the samurai class and their art of battle, known as bujyutsu, faced cultural shifts. Aikido was developed as a way to cultivate peace and harmony through the integration of martial techniques and philosophies. London Aikikai acknowledges and embraces this history and aims to provide a nurturing and authentic Aikido experience to its students.
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced practitioner, London Aikikai - Traditional Aikido offers a welcoming and inclusive environment for individuals of all ages and skill levels. Join the school today and embark on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth through the practise of Aikido.
