Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park

OverviewExperiencesAboutContact

About

hundred years of farming left the land degraded and and the native vegetation depleted. However, in the 1990s, a group of mountain bikers saw the potential in the area and began working to transform it into a world-class mountain bike park.

Through countless hours of volunteer work, the Mkara Peak Supporters have restored the land to its former glory and created over 40 kilometres of world-class singletrack trails. These trails cater to riders of all ages and abilities, from the steepest and most challenging descents to gentle rolling trails that are perfect for families.

One of the park's standout features is the 72-metre-long suspension bridge that spans a deep gully, offering riders a thrilling and unique experience. As riders traverse the bridge, they are treated to panoramic views of Wellington Harbour, Cook Strait, and the upper South Island.

But Mkara Peak Mountain Bike Park is more than just a bike park. It is also an important conservation area and plays a crucial role in Wellington's Outer Green Belt. The park's 250 hectares of regenerating native bush are home to a variety of native species, including kahikatea, rimu, tawa, kohekohe, maire, and miro.

Volunteers at the park have been working tirelessly to reintroduce these species and manage a comprehensive network of trap lines to eradicate introduced pests, such as rats and stoats. This conservation work supports the reintroduction of native birds and helps to create a safe habitat for wildlife.

Mkara Peak is classified as a Key Native Ecosystem and is the first Ministry for Primary Industries certified 'carbon sink' in Wellington. Its proximity to Zealandia sanctuary and Otari-Wilton's Bush makes it a significant corridor between reserves and contributes to the overall conservation efforts in the area.

By participating in the park's activities and events, visitors have the opportunity to learn about the surrounding environment and become actively involved in conservation efforts. Mkara Peak Bike Park is a perfect example of how conservation, community, and recreation can come together to create something truly special.

The park relies heavily on volunteer labour, donations, and grants to continue building and maintaining tracks and carrying out conservation work. Over 4,500 volunteer hours are dedicated to the park each year, and every contribution makes a real and lasting difference.

So whether you're an experienced mountain biker looking for an adrenaline-pumping ride or a family looking to enjoy a day out in nature, Mkara Peak Mountain Bike Park has something for everyone. Come and experience the thrill of riding through native bush, enjoy breathtaking views, and contribute to the conservation efforts that make this park truly unique.
