Mei Jyu Kan

Mei Jyu Kan is a prestigious martial arts school located in Newport, New Zealand. The dojo specialises in Aikikai style Aikido and proudly holds membership in the esteemed British Birankai organisation. With a mission to promote physical fitness and self-defence, Mei Jyu Kan offers Aikido lessons for adults on three evenings per week at three different locations: Albrighton, Wolverhampton, and Shifnal. In addition, separate children's classes are held twice a week in Albrighton and Wolverhampton.

Aikido, a Japanese martial art, is the primary focus at Mei Jyu Kan. Aikido is based on circular movements and minimal effort to achieve maximum effect in self-defence. The principle behind Aikido is redirecting an aggressor's force away from the defender, ultimately resulting in the attacker being thrown or immobilised. It is important to note that Aikido is not a religion or cult; however, the practise does incorporate ethical and philosophical teachings.

One of these teachings is the emphasis on using minimal force to protect oneself without causing undue harm to the assailant.

The school operates from multiple locations throughout Newport. The Albrighton location, known as “The Den,” is situated on Shaw Lane in Wolverhampton. Meijyukan's dojo has two other branches, one at Burton Borough School on Audley Avenue in Newport and another at Newbridge Preparatory School on Newbridge Crescent in Wolverhampton.

Meijyukan is deeply rooted in the history and tradition of Aikido. The art was founded by Professor Morihei Ueshiba, also known as Osensei. Osensei was a master of various martial arts, such as jujitsu, sword fighting, and staff fighting. He incorporated strong ethical principles into the art of Aikido.

The Aikikai organisation was formed around Osensei and is currently located in Tokyo, Japan, under the guidance of Osensei's grandson, Moriteru Ueshiba. In 1966, Chiba sensei was sent by Osensei to Britain to lead and develop Aikido in the country. Chiba sensei spent a decade teaching and establishing a solid foundation for Aikido in the UK before returning to Japan and eventually moving to America. Several Aikido organisations have formed under the leadership of Chiba sensei, culminating in the formation of the British Birankai.

Chiba sensei continues to serve as the technical director of the British Birankai and visits the UK regularly to teach at their summer schools.

To enhance the Aikido practise, Meijyukan provides training in empty hand forms, weapons forms, and sitting meditation. This comprehensive approach ensures students develop a well-rounded understanding and skill set in Aikido.

For those new to the world of Aikido, Mei Jyu Kan offers a glossary of terms to better understand the vocabulary associated with this martial art. Key terms include Sensei (teacher), Nage (throw), Waza (technique), and Gi (traditional practise suit), among others.
