

National Smelting Company Boxing Club, also known as Smelters Boxing Gym, is a well-established amateur boxing club located in Avonmouth, Bristol. Founded in the 1930s at the National Smelting Company, the club has since relocated several times but has remained a pillar in the local boxing community, producing numerous boxing heroes throughout the years.
As a member of the Amateur Boxing Alliance and accredited by Club Mark, National Smelting Company Boxing Club is dedicated to promoting fitness, discipline, and friendship through the sport of boxing. The head coach of NSC ABC is Garry Cave, a level 3 head coach and gym instructor. He is supported by a team of experienced coaches, including Courtney Burke, Joe Burnham, Tyler Davies, Matt Fenwick (also a personal trainer), Dan Goldstone, and Sam Smyth. All coaches are level 1 and 2 qualified, ensuring that members receive top-notch coaching and guidance.

Smelters Boxing Gym is open to anyone over the age of 8 and offers a range of classes throughout the week. Joining the gym is as simple as attending one of their classes or reaching out to them through their website. There is a small weekly membership fee to access the gym and its facilities.
The gym itself is equipped with excellent facilities to support the training needs of its members. It features two 16ft boxing rings and 14 punch bags, providing ample space for practising boxing techniques and honing skills. In addition to the boxing-specific equipment, Smelters also offers various fitness and training equipment such as Olympic free weights, dumbbells and benches, kettlebells, and medicine balls. To ensure proper technique training, the gym boasts a large sports sprung wooden floor and mirrored training area.

With computer scoring making each punch count towards points, the coaching team prioritises the art of “hit without being hit. ” They believe in building a strong foundation by focusing on skills such as stance, guard, movement, and defence, while gradually improving fitness levels.
