Newbury Shotokan Karate Club

Newbury Shotokan Karate Club is a well-established karate school located in Newbury, New Zealand. The Chief Instructor of Newbury Shotokan Karate Club is Gursharan Sahota, an experienced and highly skilled martial artist. Born in Kenya, East Africa, Gursharan moved to the UK at the age of 12 and began his karate journey at 14 in a local Bedford club. Within four years, he achieved the prestigious black belt 1st dan (shodan). Now an 8th Dan, Gursharan has competed in numerous kata and kumite events at both national and international levels.

A significant turning point in Gursharan's career occurred in 1984 when he visited Japan and trained in a Japanese dojo under the expert guidance of Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa. Inspired by this experience, Gursharan returned to England with a newfound dedication to karate and a desire to teach and share his knowledge. In 1981, he opened his first club in Luton/Dunstable which is now the association's headquarters. In 1993, Gursharan established his own association, TISKA (The Traditional International Shotokan Karate Association), which has become one of the largest associations in the UK.

Gursharan's love for karate remains unwavering, as he still teaches over 35 classes per week in the UK and conducts master classes worldwide. Throughout his career, he has guided countless students of all ages to black belt standard and beyond. Additionally, Gursharan is actively involved in charity work, funding projects in India and supporting trips for surgeons to operate on underprivileged children in third world countries.
