About
Newport Bridge Club is a small and friendly club located in Newport, New Zealand. They specialise in playing duplicate bridge and meet every Tuesday and Thursday evening at “The Hub” in the city centre. The club has been in operation since 1984 and was highly successful until the COVID pandemic hit. Unfortunately, due to a decline in membership, the club made the difficult decision to close as of July 27, 2023.
On a typical club night, around seven tables would be occupied out of a room that can accommodate up to ten. The club aims to create a relaxed atmosphere while still encouraging a good standard of bridge etiquette and adherence to the rules. They are affiliated with the English Bridge Union (EBU) and participate in the Masterpoint scheme. They also compete annually for several trophies, which can be found under the “Competitions” section on their website.
Visitors are warmly welcomed at Newport Bridge Club. While they do not operate a hosting system, the club makes an effort to find a partner for anyone in need. Play begins at approximately 7:15 pm, and players are requested to arrive by 7:00 pm to allow the Tournament Director time to organise the duplicate movement.
For more information on the club's activities, competitions, and membership, visitors can visit the Newport Bridge Club website. The website also provides useful links and resources related to bridge. Despite the unfortunate closure of the Newport Bridge Club, they express their gratitude to all past members for their support and wish them luck in finding another bridge club where they can continue to enjoy the game.
