Over 200 boat moorings, and extensive member facilities. The original developers envisioned a world-class marina with executive-type homes surrounding it. The marina complex, completed over 20 years ago with a $6. 2 million price tag, boasted superb advertising and marketing strategies.
The development included a model home with a 25-foot cabin cruiser in a swimming pool, barbeques, helicopter rides, and sleigh rides on the water.
Unfortunately, a real estate recession and changes in ownership delayed the completion of amenities and regular dredging of the harbour entrance. In 2011, the marina was put up for sale due to a lack of viability and significant back taxes owed. Concerns about the lack of a dredging plan to keep the entrance to Lake Ontario open led three members, Peter Martin, Jack Book, and Bill McCartney, to form Newport Yacht Club Stoney Creek Inc. in the spring of 2012.
Under the leadership of the first Commodore, Jack Book, and subsequent Commodores Barry Stringfellow, Michael Rushton, and Zena Thomas, the club underwent necessary repairs and upgrades. Members banded together to dredge the harbour entrance, construct a seawall, install necessary utilities, and build a boardwalk. The club prides itself on its commitment to safe, sustainable, and socially responsible boating practices.
