The Newry Studio of Irish Dancing is a renowned sports club located in Adelaide, Australia. Founded over 40 years ago by sisters Julie Idema and Bernadette Helbig, the studio is now under the direction of Emilie Court TCRG, their niece and daughter. All the studio's teachers are registered with CLRG (the international governing body of Irish Dancing), as well as the Australian Irish Dancing Association and the Australian Irish Dancing Association SA/NT branch.
The Newry Studio is dedicated to promoting a love for Irish Dancing in all its forms and fostering relationships and community among its members. They believe that dance enriches one's life beyond coordination and fitness, and strive to provide their students with a whole new world to explore and discover. The studio offers recreational and competitive dance classes for individuals of all ages, from 2+ years to adults.
The Newry Studio provides its students with the opportunity to perform locally, nationally, and internationally in various capacities, including solo dancing, team dancing, and performances in both traditional and modern styles. They invite individuals and families to join their world of Irish Dancing and experience all that it has to offer.
In addition to their regular dance programmes, the Newry Studio is also proud to offer the Jump'n Jig Irish Dance preschool programme. This programme, designed by an Australian Early Years School Teacher, focuses on holistically developing children's fundamental physical skills through music and movement. It is a perfect way for young children to begin their Irish Dancing adventure and is available for children aged 2 and above.
For students aged 5 and above, or those in their first year of school, the Newry Studio offers grade level dancing. This is where new students start their Irish Dancing journey and progress through three levels: Novice/Beginner, Primary, and Elementary. Students begin with 'soft shoe' classes and are later invited to join 'hard shoe' classes as their skills improve. Students progress through these levels based on their age, experience, and skill level.
Those who complete their Elementary level in both hard and soft shoes can move on to Championship dancing. Grade Level Dancers apply their skills in various performance aspects, including traditional and modern Irish dance, both individually and as part of a team, at exams, competitions, and public performances.
The Newry Studio also offers Championship classes for students who aim to reach the highest level of dancing. Championship students are required to attend a minimum of two classes per week and are encouraged to participate in private lessons. They learn and master advanced techniques and dances, and have the opportunity to perform at state, national, and international levels. Championship students continue to participate in dance exams, local competitions, and public performances.
Team dancing participation is encouraged among all students at the Newry Studio. They have the opportunity to be part of team performances, further enhancing their skills and fostering a sense of camaraderie among the dancers.
With its rich history, experienced teachers, and vibrant dance programmes, the Newry Studio of Irish Dancing is a welcoming and exciting place for individuals of all ages to learn and excel in the art of Irish Dancing.
