Nottingham Model Boat Club (Summer Sundays)

OverviewAboutContact

About

Welcome to the Nottingham Model Boat Club (Summer Sundays), located in Nottingham, New Zealand. This club is home to a group of members who all share a passion for model boats of all types, scales, and styles, including sail, speed, and steam-powered models. They warmly welcome others who have a similar interest in model boat building and sailing.

The club prides itself on having a wide range of expertise among its members, catering to both beginners who are just starting out and experienced individuals who have been building and sailing model boats for years. They believe in fostering a supportive environment where members can pursue their hobby and learn from each other.

Regular meetings are held throughout the year at Colwick Park, providing ample opportunities for members to sail and showcase their model boats. In the summer months, the club also meets at Highfields on Sunday mornings. However, due to accessibility issues in recent years, the club has negotiated a third venue, Attenborough Sailing Club, where members from the west of Nottingham can sail. This venue is open from March to December, seven days a week.

The Nottingham Model Boat Club welcomes any type of model boat and aims to enhance members' knowledge and understanding of the diverse world of model boating. Many of their members enjoy building their own models from scratch or kits, while others prefer to purchase “ready to run” models. Whatever your preference, the club is delighted to have you join them.

If you have a model boat that's been tucked away in your attic for years, the club is more than happy to help you resurrect it and get it back on the water. They provide assistance and guidance to ensure that you can fully enjoy your model boating experience.

On their website, you will find a menu on the left consisting of main headings and sub-pages. Simply click on the arrows next to the headings to explore the various sections and information provided.

In February 2023, the club will be holding their Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Calverton Working Men's Club. The AGM provides an opportunity for members to come together, pay their subscriptions for the year, and receive their membership cards. It's not just a formal affair – refreshments will be available, and the club bar will be open for those who wish to enjoy a beer afterwards.

The Nottingham Model Boat Club has a rich history dating back to 1931 when it was originally formed as The Nottingham Model Yacht Club. With just 13 members, the club was based at Highfields Park, which remains at the heart of their historic roots. In the early days, yachts were the main focus of model sailing due to the absence of radio control. Members would launch their yachts into the water and use poles to navigate them across the lake, showcasing their skills in hull design and sail setting.

Throughout the years, advancements in technology, particularly the introduction of radio control in the 1950s, have allowed model boat enthusiasts to explore new possibilities and expand their horizons. The Nottingham Model Boat Club has evolved alongside these changes, embracing new innovations while still celebrating its rich heritage.

Join the Nottingham Model Boat Club and become part of a vibrant community of model boat enthusiasts who are passionate about their hobby and committed to having fun.
