About

Olympic Plaza is a stunning park and ice skating rink located in downtown Calgary. Built in 1988 for the Olympic Winter Games, this picturesque plaza has one of the few refrigerated outdoor ice surfaces in the city, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. The plaza was originally the site of the medal presentation ceremonies during the Olympics and now hosts various special events and festivals throughout the year.

Situated at 228 8 Ave. S. E, Olympic Plaza covers 1. 2 hectares of land and is open from early in the morning until 11 p.

m. Visitors can enjoy a range of park features, including a reflecting pond (available from May to October), the famous Five sculpture, a large seating area, table seating, a stage for performances, a seasonal concession stand, evening and holiday lighting, flags, and a variety of plant life.

One of the main attractions of Olympic Plaza is its outdoor skating rink, which offers a unique and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages. The rink is open for public skating, but availability may be limited during special events and festivals. Rentals for ice skates are provided, allowing visitors to glide across the ice and soak up the vibrant atmosphere of the plaza.

In addition to its recreational amenities, Olympic Plaza also has a rich history. The park encompasses a section of the escarpment and features gravel deposits on the flats, which have undergone constant change over time. Prior to becoming parkland, the area was owned by large landowners, with minimal evidence of human activities or settlement. A notable structure within the park is the “sappers bridge,” constructed in 1992 by military field engineers.

Whether you're looking to enjoy a leisurely lunch break, partake in some outdoor skating, or attend a lively event, Olympic Plaza offers something for everyone. Experience the beauty and vibrancy of this iconic Calgary destination and make lasting memories with family and friends.
