About
At the heart of Oxford, the "Oxford Uechi-Ryu Karate Dojo" stands as a premier school for karate enthusiasts. Mick Pappas, a 7th Dan black belt, leads the dojo with years of experience under his belt. For any queries, Mick can be reached on 01865 251643 or at mick@uechi-ryu.co.uk.
Mick's journey began in 1975, training under Dave Scott, a direct student of Okinawa masters. His approach focuses on practical self-defence and fitness, blending intense energy output with keen situational awareness. Mick has trained with renowned instructors including George E. Mattson and grand-master Kanei Uechi, and has attended global gatherings to honour the legacy of Kanbun Uechi, a pivotal figure in martial arts.
At the Oxford dojo, students receive individual attention in a safe, ventilated environment. Mick encourages learners to pace themselves, mastering foundational exercises before combining them into more advanced techniques, all while avoiding unnecessary bruising. The Uechi-Ryu style, with its mix of hard and soft techniques, upright stance, and unique kicks, offers a rich tradition rooted in China and perfected in Okinawa.
Affiliated with the Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do Association (GB) and a member of the English Karate Federation (EKF), the dojo upholds high training standards. It welcomes students of all ages and skill levels, offering a supportive space to enhance fitness and deepen martial arts knowledge. Join the Oxford Uechi-Ryu Karate Dojo and embark on an exciting journey in the world of karate!
