Pauanui/Tairua Cycle and Walking Trail

The Pauanui/Tairua Cycle and Walking Trail, also known as the Tairua River Trail, is a picturesque route that runs along the banks of the Tairua River in the stunning eastern Coromandel region of New Zealand. The trail starts at the Waterways in Pauanui and stretches for 6. 4 km through a diverse landscape of mangroves, native forests, and rolling farmland, ending at a point downstream from Hikuai.

The ultimate aim of the trail is to connect the communities of Tairua and Pauanui, and plans are underway to secure funding and obtain the necessary approvals to complete a 15 km route between the two towns. This will involve the construction of a bridge across the Tairua River and a trail along its northern bank leading into Tairua. Once finished, the trail will be a valuable addition to the Coromandel's network of trails.

Completing the trail will bring a host of benefits to the region. Firstly, it will provide a safe and scenic off-road route that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities. Additionally, it is expected to boost “cycle tourism” in the area, bringing more visitors to local businesses. Pedestrian safety improvements will be made south of Tairua town centre, enhancing the overall safety for pedestrians. The trail is classified as a Grade 2 cycleway, meaning it is suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and experience. However, it has been designed to accommodate walkers, runners, and cyclists of all abilities.
