Sunshine Coast, a prominent Basketball club based in Nambour, is excited to announce an upcoming event that is not to be missed! In collaboration with Special Olympics Australia, this event aims to enhance the inclusivity of people with intellectual disabilities in the world of gymnastics.
Over the next three years, Special Olympics Australia and Gymnastics Australia will be working together on various initiatives to increase participation opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. One exciting aspect of this partnership is the integration of Special Olympics competitions into state gymnastics competitions, allowing athletes to showcase their skills on a larger stage.
Both organisations have been dedicated to promoting and delivering inclusive sport programs for the past three years, with a strong focus on developing participants' physical literacy. By equipping individuals with the foundational movement skills they need, they are empowering them to lead active and fulfilling lives. Gymnastics Australia firmly believes that gymnastics can provide people of all abilities with the necessary skills and experiences to develop their physical literacy, ultimately giving them the confidence and motivation to stay active.
To further support this important cause, the partnership will also be utilising the Australian Government's Sporting Schools initiative. Through a specifically adapted program for students with intellectual disabilities, they aim to provide even more opportunities for inclusive sport participation.
One successful program that has already made a positive impact is Special Olympics Australia's Young Athletes program. This play-based program focuses on helping children aged two to eight, both with and without intellectual disabilities, develop fundamental movement skills. Thanks to the dedicated coaches, who have completed Special Olympics Australia's coaching course, over 40 programs have been delivered to approximately 640 participants in New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, and Victoria.
Moving forward, the partnership strives to expand the Young Athletes program nationwide. By providing recreational gymnastics as a pathway into Gymnastics Australia's Kindergym program or Special Olympics club training, even more individuals will have the opportunity to experience the joy and benefits of gymnastics.
