The club operates from April to September, with practise sessions available Monday to Friday from 1pm until 4pm, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm. If you are new to the sport of bowls, the club provides a helpful guide on how the game is played. Bowls is played on a square of grass called a green, divided into lanes known as rinks. Players take turns to deliver their bowls from a mat towards a small white target ball, called the 'jack', situated at the other end.
The aim is to get your bowls as close to the jack as possible, with points awarded for each bowl closer to the jack than your opponent's nearest bowl.
Bowls can be played as singles or in teams, with teams consisting of pairs, triples, or fours. Each team member has a specific role to play, such as the lead who places the mat, delivers the jack, and aims to bowl close to the jack. The second or two keeps track of the score and scoreboard, while the third or three may play different shots tactically to score more or protect an advantage. The skip, or fourth player, makes strategic decisions and agrees on the number of shots to play.
