Perth Tango Academy

Perth Tango Academy, located in Subiaco, is a renowned dance school specialising in Argentine Tango. With a rich history and a passion for this elegant and passionate dance form, the academy has been teaching Tango since 1996, making it the oldest continuous running Tango academy in Australia.

Founded by Juan Rando, a dedicated dancer and instructor, the academy aims to bring the joy and beauty of Tango to Perth. Juan's love for discovering new styles of dance led him to immerse himself in Tango, studying it full-time for a year and a half in Argentina and the USA before returning to Australia and establishing the Juan Rando Dance Academy in October 1998.

At Perth Tango Academy, a comprehensive programme of Tango classes is offered on Mondays and Thursdays. The classes cater to dancers of all levels, from beginners to advanced. On Mondays, students can join the Level 1 class for an introduction to Argentine Tango. The Level 2 class goes beyond the basics, and participants are encouraged to take it multiple times to cover all the material.

The Level 3 class focuses on classic Tango salon combinations for the social dance floor. Lastly, the Level 4 class, by invitation only, delves into Neo Tango, requiring a solid understanding of social lead/follow and the ability to maintain balance during turns.

On Thursdays, there are two sessions available. The first session is dedicated to walking and styling classes, where students work on developing a strong Classic Tango walk and learn styling and musicality techniques to enhance their social dancing. The second session is a speciality class that explores a specific topic each term, such as counter-balance, Volcadas, or Enredadas, often at a higher skill level.

Argentine Tango is a dance of passion and elegance, originating in the Rio de la Plata region of Argentina and Uruguay at the turn of the 20th century. Born among the poor immigrant classes, Tango has a rich folklore and history. It spread globally in the early decades of the 20th century and experienced a revival in the late 80s, remaining incredibly popular to this day.

Perth Tango Academy takes pride in preserving and promoting this beautiful dance form. Juan Rando and his team are dedicated to continuously improving their understanding of the techniques that make Tango so exquisite and connected. They also organise Tango dance events and challenges to create a vibrant and dynamic Tango community in Perth.
