Founded in 1885, the Petone Rugby Football Club holds the distinction of being the third-oldest rugby club in Wellington. Our rich history and heritage are deeply rooted in the local community. In fact, our club's founding match featured three descendants of Paramount Chief Honiana Te Puni, an important figure in the Hutt Valley's history. We take great pride in our multicultural mix of members and maintain a family-oriented environment where visitors are always welcome to experience our warm hospitality.
Petone rugby has a long tradition of producing exceptional players who have represented both regional and national teams. The club can proudly claim to have produced 30 All Blacks, including legendary figures such as Ken Grey, who is often regarded as one of the greatest prop forwards in the history of the game. In addition, we have also nurtured the talents of three Black Ferns, highlighting our commitment to promoting women's rugby. Our junior club actively encourages girls of all ages to get involved, offering a variety of options including two-handed touch, tackle, and Rippa Rugby.
Women's rugby has seen a significant rise in popularity in New Zealand, and our very own women's team, the Petone Ponies, epitomises the spirit of talent, dedication, and camaraderie that defines our club. The Petone Rugby Football Club, affectionately known as “The Village,” boasts an impressive list of achievements. We have been crowned Wellington top champions 38 times between 1895 and 2005 and have won the club championship a remarkable 42 times between 1922 and 2006. Our players have also represented various countries in internationals, demonstrating the global reach and calibre of our talent. Our club has played a crucial role in developing rugby at all levels, including producing players for the New Zealand Under 20s and Sevens teams.
