Platypus Pilates Studio is a Pilates studio located in the heart of Wellington. With a focus on fascial manipulation, the studio offers two different methods to manipulate the fascia – the Stecco method as a treatment and the Rossiter method as a workout.
For the Stecco method, an in-depth medical history is taken, followed by the identification of densified points through movement verification and palpation. These points are then manipulated using pressure applied with elbow, knuckle, or thumb until the pain subsides. In some cases, partial undressing may be required to ensure optimal treatment.
On the other hand, the Rossiter method involves lying down fully dressed while the coach places their “clean socked” foot on a specific area, such as the arm. Pressure is applied until the client indicates it is enough, and then they are instructed to move the arm slowly through a particular movement. This process is repeated 2–3 times. Both methods may cause some discomfort, but they often provide immediate relief and increased range of motion.
The choice between the two methods ultimately depends on personal preference, with Rossiter being a more global approach and Stecco being more localised and precise.
Mariska, the studio's owner and coach, is a registered Fascial Manipulation Level III provider, making her the only one in New Zealand. She is also a certified Rossiter coach. Treatments at Platypus Pilates Studio typically last between 60 to 90 minutes and cost $60 or $90. Once clients have experienced the benefits of fascial manipulation and are moving freely and pain-free, they are encouraged to join Pilates classes offered at the studio.
