About
Portchester Karate Dojo is a well-established and reputable karate school located in Fareham, Hampshire. Founded in 1982, the club is dedicated to teaching the art of karate in a welcoming and friendly environment.
Karate, which translates to 'empty hand', is a Japanese martial art that goes beyond self-defence. It instils self-confidence, self-discipline, and a sense of respect for oneself and others. Regular training in karate also helps to develop stamina, strength, and maintain good physical health. Portchester Karate Dojo welcomes members of all ages, ranging from 6 to 89 years old.
The club's chief instructor is Sensei Merv O'Donnell, who holds an impressive 8th Dan black belt. Sensei Merv has been fortunate enough to receive direct instruction from some of the earliest Japanese Senseis to come to England, including Senseis Kanazawa, Enoeda, Asano, and Ochi.
Portchester Karate Dojo aims to create an inclusive and supportive community. New members are always welcome, and the club strives to make them feel like part of the family as quickly as possible. Whether you're a complete beginner or someone who has always wanted to try karate but never had the opportunity, the club encourages you to reach out to them via email, telephone, or by attending one of their sessions.
Training sessions take place at various times throughout the week. Monday evenings are dedicated to a general lesson for older children (12+) and adult kyu grades. On Wednesdays, the focus is on dan grades. Thursday mornings offer training for all grades at the Castle Street Day Centre.
Friday evenings and Saturday mornings cater to younger children (under 12) and general lessons for older children and adults respectively.
The Portchester Karate Dojo is affiliated with Rengokai and participates in various karate events and activities. The club also organises other recreational and social activities for its members. The official website serves as a hub of information about the club, its news, training schedule, and other activities. In addition, the website features a gallery showcasing the achievements and experiences of the club's members.
For further information or to inquire about joining Portchester Karate Dojo, interested individuals can contact Sensei Merv O'Donnell at 07713284430 or via email at mvodonnell@hotmail. Com. The club looks forward to welcoming new members and sharing the practise of karate with the Fareham community.
