Portlaoise Panthers is a well-established Basketball club located in the heart of Portlaoise, catering to players of all ages. Founded in 1965, the club has a rich and successful history, originally known as Portlaoise Basketball Club. The home of Portlaoise Panthers is at St Marys Hall, Portlaoise, which boasts a capacity for 400 spectators, a viewing gallery, and a caf for a complete basketball experience.
With an active and expanding membership of 400 players, coaches, and management, along with a network of parents and supporters, Portlaoise Panthers offers a community-focused approach to the sport. The club fields 27 teams, including Senior, Juvenile teams aged 10 to 18, and Academy players aged 4 to 7 years old. These teams compete in various leagues and tournaments, such as Ireland's National League, National Cups, Midland Leagues, and Kilkenny and SE Leagues.
Portlaoise Panthers have experienced success on the national stage, winning Basketball Ireland's National League and National Cup in 2013/2014 & 2014/2015, as well as the National Cup at U18 and Senior level in 2019/2020. The club holds the title of the most successful club in the Midlands Area and was awarded Basketball Ireland's "Club of The Year" for the 2019/2020 season.
The club's commitment to developing young talent is evident through the presence of 7 boys and girls on Basketball Ireland's international teams, including U16, U17, and U18. Portlaoise Panthers also contribute to youth sport and the local community by delivering 1,750 hours of training and competitive games for their teams during the winter months.
In collaboration with local schools and sports bodies, Portlaoise Panthers provide basketball activities for over 1000 school kids from 19 local schools, further enhancing the club's impact on the community. The dedication to promoting basketball at all levels and fostering a sense of community involvement makes Portlaoise Panthers a standout club in the region.
