Powell Performing Arts

Powell Performing Arts is a renowned dance school in Bristol, New Zealand, dedicated to nurturing the love and passion for dance in individuals. The ballet classes at Powell Performing Arts are part of the Royal Ballet School's new Affiliate Training and Assessment programme. This affiliation ensures that students receive the highest standard of training and education. The classes take a holistic approach to dance learning, covering performance skills, repertoire, choreography, and appreciation. Students not only develop their skills but also gain a deeper understanding of the art form as a whole.

The Autumn Term at Powell Performing Arts runs from September 19th to December 16th. Classes are held on Mondays at Turnberries Community Centre in Thornbury. There are two age groups catered to: 4–6 years and 7–8 years. The class timings are from 4:15 pm to 5:00 pm for the younger group and from 5:00 pm to 5:45 pm for the older group.

The cost is 7 per class, with termly payment options available.

Isobel Powell, the Principal Ballet Teacher at Powell Performing Arts, brings a wealth of experience and expertise. She is currently undergoing training to become an affiliate teacher of The Royal Ballet School. Isobel's own journey in dance began with vocational training at the Arts Educational School Tring, followed by professional training at Bird College. She was an associate of The Royal Ballet School from a young age and has performed as a soloist with the National Youth Ballet and the English National Ballet.

Isobel's passion for music and choreography has been recognised through various awards, including the Barbara Geoghan choreographic award and the ISTD Young Dancer of the Year. Her choreography has been showcased at renowned venues like Sadlers Wells, London. She has also taught at prestigious institutions like Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and currently serves as the Head of Dance at Bristol's vocational Musical Theatre Vocational College, The Big Act.

In addition to her achievements in ballet, Isobel has studied tap dance with The American Tap Dance Foundation in New York and has worked with several dance companies in the UK. Her extensive performance credits include appearances in productions like Carousel, Hooray for Hollywood, Cinderella, and collaborations with Swerve Theatre Dance Company, Cirque Show (Dubai), and Hofesh Shechter Company.

Isobel's expertise and dedication extend to teaching children of all ages. She coaches pupils for ISTD and RAD exams, competitions, and eisteddfod dances. Many of her students have gone on to secure major roles in the West End or pursue professional training at leading London vocational colleges. Alongside her work at Powell Performing Arts, Isobel conducts professional tap and jazz workshops for dance students and professionals across the South West.
