Chris would like to share some exciting details about Prestwick Golf Club with the sports community. Located in Prestwick, Scotland, this club is a historic gem in the golfing world.
Established in 1851 by a group of 57 keen members, Prestwick's roots run deep. The club's early days saw the purchase of two cottages opposite the Red Lion Inn. One became the clubhouse, while the other was given to Old Tom Morris, the club's Keeper of the Green, ball, and clubmaker. The inaugural captain, the Earl of Eglinton, even presented a gold medal for an annual competition that still takes place today.
Old Tom Morris, with his wife Agnes and young son Tommy, relocated from St Andrews to design the club’s original 12-hole course. This unique layout quickly gained popularity, and within 10 years, Prestwick hosted the first Open Championship. Over the years, it held 24 Open Championships, the last in 1925, establishing its significant presence in golf history.
After Old Tom returned to St Andrews in 1864, the club auctioned off his house to help fund the current clubhouse, completed in 1868. Over the years, the clubhouse has seen extensions and redevelopments, including a major one in 1999, enhancing its prime position near the first tee and 18th green. Remarkably, the 90 lockers inside have been in use since 1882.
The links course at Prestwick offers an authentic golfing experience, with notable holes like Railway, Tunnel, Cardinal, and Himalayas. Different tee options cater to players of all skill levels, ensuring everyone enjoys a memorable round.
Chris wants everyone visiting Prestwick Golf Club to expect a warm welcome and the opportunity to play on a truly legendary course. Booking tee times is conveniently done online. With its rich history and beautiful course, Prestwick Golf Club is a must-visit for all golf enthusiasts.
