Queer as Foxtrot

Queer as Foxtrot is a dance school in Fitzroy that offers a safe and welcoming environment for the LGBTQI community to learn, socialise, and have fun. With over 25 years of experience, Anny Salerni, the head instructor, has been dedicated to teaching same-sex dancing and creating a space where people can make new friends and enjoy the joy of dance.

Anny Salerni's passion for dance began at a young age, starting lessons at the renowned May Down's Dance School when she was only five years old. She trained in various dance styles such as jazz ballet, tap, contemporary, classical ballet, and folk dancing. As she grew older, she ventured into ballroom and Latin dance, eventually becoming a professional member of the Australian Dancing Society.

After gaining experience as a teacher at different dance studios in Melbourne, Anny decided to establish her own space Dance Cats Studio. Against all odds, the studio flourished and became a full-time LGBTQI dance studio, winning several medals at international same-sex competitions and experiencing significant growth in student numbers. Anny's dedication and hard work paid off, and she was proud to prove the doubters wrong.

Throughout her career, Anny has contributed greatly to the LGBTQI dance community. She began organising the Australian Same-Sex DanceSports event as part of the Midsumma Festival in 1998, a tradition that continues to this day. Anny was also the choreographer for the 2010 Midsumma Festival play called Tango Femme, showcasing her talent and creativity. Her remarkable journey in the dance industry was even documented in the ABC documentary 'Ballroom Rules' in 2011, highlighting her impact and dedication.

Although Anny had initially planned on retiring from the dance industry when she sold Dance Cats Studio in 2012, her love for dance was too strong to stay away. This led her to establish Queer as Foxtrot, a dance school that aims to provide a supportive space for people to connect and learn in a non-threatening and friendly environment.

At Queer as Foxtrot, dancing goes beyond learning the steps; it's about building connexions and making friends within the LGBTQI community. The school offers various classes and a social gathering every Friday, where students can practise their moves and get to know like-minded individuals.
