River Teign Rowing Club

Welcome to River Teign Rowing Club, the heart, and soul of Teignmouth Rowing. Established in 1994, we are proud to be the largest rowing club in the UK and possibly Europe. Our collective members represent the essence of our club, bringing together rowing enthusiasts of all ages.

In the Gig Section, we have a very competitive team that participates in the Gig World Championships at the Isles of Scilly and the National Championships in Newquay every year. You can also find us at several gig regattas across the southwest region. Our club fleet includes some remarkable additions, such as the Cornish pilot gig Jeannie, generously loaned to us by Teignmothian in exile, George Payne. We also have Teign Spirit, commissioned and loaned to us by Bert & Lisa Blank, and Double Dutch, which was sold in 2011.

We were fortunate to acquire a new gig named “Morgan” in 2008, with the support of the Sports for All Lottery Funding. Built by B & A Pomeroy in Dartmouth, Morgan has propelled our club to even greater success.

For those interested in Seine Boats, we have a rich history to share. Traditional River Teign Seine Boats are seventeen feet long and clinker-built, featuring English Elm bottoms and larch topsides. These boats have been used in the Teign Estuary for centuries for salmon seining. They were typically propelled by oars or sails and often named after the owner's mother or wife.

These boats are designed to carry a tonne of shellfish and still float in less than eighteen inches of water.

Whether you are a seasoned rower or a novice, River Teign Rowing Club offers a welcoming and supportive environment for all skill levels. We also have a dedicated Juniors programme for young rowers to develop their skills and passion for the sport. We hold regular Novice Nights to help newcomers learn the ropes and become part of our rowing community.
