Running Head First is a not-for-profit organisation based in Wallasey, North West England, dedicated to improving the mental health of the local population through walking, jogging, running, and physical activity. Founded in 2019 by Chris Redmond, Lee Plant, and Ash Cox, all of Running Head First's initiatives are evidence-based interventions supported by scientific research from their lead scientist, Ash.
The idea for Running Head First stemmed from Chris Redmond's personal experience with mental health. After enduring anxiety, stress, and depression for a long period of time, Chris suffered a nervous breakdown in 2015. During his recovery, he discovered the power of running as a tool for managing his symptoms and progressing towards better mental health. With the support of his family, friends, and girlfriend, Chris was able to successfully transition to a healthier state of mind.
Recognising the lack of physical exercise options available to individuals dealing with similar situations, Chris decided to create Running Head First. He enlisted the expertise of his colleagues Lee and Ash, who bring extensive knowledge and experience in fitness, health, and business to the organisation.
Running Head First offers a range of services and interventions to support mental health. These include various treatment pathways, inclusive social groups, and a Run Club that caters to individuals of all abilities. Additionally, Running Head First organises walking and running groups at different locations across the North West England on weekends. The organisation is also in the process of developing an online run club to provide accessibility and convenience to those interested.
In addition to their regular services, Running Head First also hosts events that are open to all. Some activities may have an additional cost and may be subject to individual physical capabilities. The organisation encourages donations to help improve the quality of life for individuals dealing with mental health issues.
