Welcome to Ryukyukan Okinawa Karate & Kobudo, Matsuri Dojo Essex, a martial arts school and karate club located in Basildon. Our aim is to provide traditional Okinawa Shorin Ryu Karate & Kobudo training to individuals of all ages and fitness levels. Whether you are looking to get fit, improve flexibility, build confidence, learn self-defence, or simply explore the ancient martial art of Okinawa, Japan, we have something for everyone.
Our team of instructors are highly qualified and experienced, with all our black belts being registered with the Okinawa Karatedo Shorinryu Ryukyukan Karate Kobudo Federation in Okinawa, Japan. We take great pride in our in-depth knowledge of both the martial arts and modern teaching methods, ensuring a well-rounded and effective training experience.
At Ryukyukan Matsuri Dojo Essex, we believe in setting achievable short-term goals to help students progress towards their black belt. We understand that the journey to black belt may seem daunting, but our approach focuses on constant growth and development through the attainment of various belt promotions or gradings. By regularly setting and reaching these smaller goals, students not only evolve as martial artists but also as individuals.
The style of karate we practise is Shorin-ryu, a traditional style originating from Okinawa, the birthplace of Karate. In our dojo, students are taught self-protection skills in an atmosphere of mutual respect, discipline, and etiquette. We also encourage students to have an open mind to all martial arts, offering training courses with world-class teachers from various disciplines such as Ju-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Aikido, and more.
With the dedication and commitment of our members, the Matsuri School continues to grow. Many of our students have progressed from beginners to teachers, and in some cases, entire families have achieved their black belts together. Whether you are a beginner or have previous martial arts experience, we welcome all new students to join our school. The first lesson is free, and we also offer private tuition if preferred.
As a member of the All Ryukyus Full Contact Karatedo Association, our school participates in full contact karate or knockdown karate. We are proud to be affiliated with this renowned group based in Okinawa, where karate originated. Each year, our international Ryukyukan Karate organisation hosts the largest full contact tournament in the Ryukyus Islands, Japan, where over 400 competitors test their skills with full contact rules.
In addition, Ryukyukan hosts tournaments with knockdown divisions in various locations, including London, North Carolina, and South America. These events provide opportunities for our students to challenge themselves and expand their skills further.
