Sailurunga is a renowned sailing school located in Urunga, Australia, offering personalised and accredited sailing tuition. The school's main attraction is the “Discover Sailing Adventure,” a three-hour sailing experience suitable for people of various abilities. Participants have the opportunity to sail from Urunga to Mylestom Village and back, marvelling at the stunning riverside scenery along the way.
During the adventure, individuals and small groups, including those with disabilities, can bond with their friends, family, or loved ones while experiencing the joy of small boat sailing. The pristine waterways may offer sightings of dolphins, turtles, sea eagles, and even shipwrecks, adding an exciting element to the journey. The adventure begins at the picturesque Urunga old rail bridge, from where participants navigate the Kalang River, occasionally sneaking through a hole in the rock wall. They then set their sails at a small island where two rivers meet before continuing up the Bellinger River.
As the adventure approaches Mylestom, participants may have the opportunity to stop and admire one of the old timber paddle steamers, known locally as Droughers, which were once used for transporting timber and goods along the rivers. After arriving in Mylestom, participants can take a break, enjoy the breathtaking views, grab a cup of coffee, indulge in some famous hot chips from the Mylestom Store, or savour other delectable goodies before heading back to Urunga.
Sailurunga utilises an Australian-made Springbank 15 boat for their sailing adventures. The boat features a small outboard motor, ensuring a comfortable and safe return in case of excess or lack of wind. The school can accommodate groups of up to three adults or two adults and two to three children, depending on their abilities and size. However, please note that pets are not permitted on the adventures.
Sailurunga can also cater to individuals who require a carer. Children must always be accompanied by an adult.
The ideal sailing window for the adventures is between 10 am and 1:30 pm, allowing for a maximum of three hours on the water. Participants must arrive at the boat ramp by 9:30 am to ensure a timely departure. Sailurunga is a nationally accredited Australian Sailing Discover Sailing Training Centre, guaranteeing high-quality instruction and enjoyable experiences.
To ensure safety, Sailurunga provides life vests, good-quality sunscreen, and bottled water for all participants, although individuals with sensitive skin may prefer to bring their own sunscreen. Waterproof cases for phones, cameras, car keys, wallets, and other valuables are also supplied. It is recommended that participants bring a pair of wet-friendly sand-shoes, a long-sleeved shirt and shorts (no bikinis, please), a hat that won't blow off, a spray jacket, a towel, a phone/camera, and some money for food.
There is no limit to the number of Discover Sailing Adventures participants can experience, and a discount may apply for repeat adventures. These adventures can be pre-booked for a day, week, or month. Additionally, Sailurunga offers customised adventures to suit individual or group preferences, even providing the option to sail on a river closer to your location. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact Sailurunga for more information and to explore the various sailing experiences available.
The fee for a Discover Sailing Adventure includes Australian Sailing Accident insurance, with prices starting at $250. 00 for one person (as of June 2019). Please note that all prices are subject to change and must be paid in advance. In the case of unsuitable weather conditions on the day of the adventure, Sailurunga offers the option of an alternate sailing day or a full refund.
Sailurunga's sailing activities primarily take place at the first boat ramp on Atherton Drive in Urunga. For easy communication, the school's contact information is conveniently provided. Principal Derek Ridgley can be contacted via mobile at 0427 115 892 or through email at sailurunga@gmail. Com.
