Join Geelong Salsa Dancing for an exciting salsa class in Geelong! Since 2009, Geelong Salsa Dancing has been offering social Latin dance classes to the local community. Every Wednesday night at the Christ Church Hall in central Geelong, they host a beginner's salsa class. For those with more experience, an intermediate lesson is also available on the same night.
No need to register in advance, simply show up and pay on the night. The cost for a casual single class is £20 per person, while a casual double class is £30 per person. Geelong Salsa Dancing also offers discounted 4-week courses where a single level is priced at £50 per person, or both levels can be taken for £80 per person.
Please note that courses must be paid upfront and cannot be carried over if a class is missed. The next course starts on 27/09. Payments can be made in cash with a card surcharge. The classes take place at Christ Church Parish Hall, located at 265 Moorabool St, Geelong VIC 3216.
At Geelong Salsa Dancing, the focus is teaching the Cuban style of salsa while incorporating elements from the LA style. The club aims to make their dancers versatile by emphasising both circular and linear styles. Alongside partnered routines for the social dance floor, they also include Rueda de Salsa (Casino), a partner-changing group-version of the dance.
The lessons are structured with moves that progressively develop into short routines over a 4-week period, providing a solid foundation and saving dancers money. Alternatively, dancers can attend on a casual basis. For first-timers attending casually, the first two weeks of each 4-week course offer an easier introduction, while weeks three and four incorporate more challenging beginner moves, making prior experience or quick learning beneficial for joining during these weeks.
Geelong Salsa Dancing has a new course starting every week, with a short break over the Christmas-New Year period. It is generally recommended for new dancers to complete at least 4 to 6 months of the beginner's class before considering the intermediate class. This helps establish a solid foundation in timing, footwork, lead/follow, and fundamental moves to avoid feeling overwhelmed in the higher-level class.
The beginner's lesson lasts for 1.5 hours, with the first hour dedicated to learning and practising the moves. The remaining half hour provides additional practice in a more social setting. For intermediate dancers, there is ample time for warm-up, practice, and social dancing with fellow students before the lesson at 8pm. After the 1-hour intermediate class, there is further time for social practice, offering up to 2.5 hours of dance.
Free parking is available in the lot opposite the hall on Little Myers Street, and the entry to the venue is also via Little Myers Street. Look for the big red doors to enter. The hall features a large wooden dance floor with air conditioning, fans, and heating for comfort. Please note that there are no mirrors in the teaching space, so bringing a drink bottle is recommended in case you get thirsty. Casual clothing and street shoes are suitable for the class, but if you prefer dance shoes, please ensure they are not too slippery for the fast floor.
Don't have a dance partner? Not a problem! Geelong Salsa Dancing will partner you up with someone during each lesson and frequently rotate partners to keep it social. If you bring your own partner, you are welcome to dance with them throughout the class.
