Welcome to Dunedin's Seido Karate Club, located just a five-minute walk from the Octagon. Seido Karate Dunedin is a small and friendly club that caters to students of all levels, from beginners to advanced, with a special junior section on Sunday mornings for our younger members.
Established in 1980, the Dunedin branch of Seido Karate is led by Sei Shihan Kelvin Lewis, a highly experienced sixth-degree black belt with over 40 years of experience. He is supported by Sei Shihan Kelvin Wilson and a team of dedicated black belts who share the teaching load.
Over the years, Seido Dunedin has produced more than 80 black belts, many of whom have gone on to become prominent instructors in dojos elsewhere.
Seido Karate is a traditional style of karate that focuses on instilling self-discipline, confidence, fitness, and technique. We welcome men, women, and children from all walks of life to experience karate-do and cultivate physical, mental, and spiritual growth to enhance their everyday lives.
Our training dojo is centrally located for easy accessibility, and we offer a diverse range of classes throughout the week. Our timetable includes specialised classes for black belts, green and brown belts, beginners, and general classes that emphasise kata (forms) and sparring.
In addition to regular training, we also host events such as general gradings and special black belt gradings. These events provide our students with opportunities for growth, advancement, and recognition within the karate community.
Seido Karate Dunedin is proudly affiliated with the Worldwide Seido Karate Organisation, which was founded in 1976 by Tadashi Nakamura, one of Mas Oyama's star pupils. The Seido lineage traces back to various martial arts styles, including Kyokushin, Shotokan, and Gojuryu, with influences from Okinawan karate.
