Jim Barber were also highly respected martial artists. Aaron has over 30 years of experience in Seido Karate and holds a 6th Dan black belt. He has competed and taught in various countries, and continues to dedicate his life to the practise and teaching of karate.
ABOUT SEIDO KARATE Nelson Shibu is a branch of Seido Karate, which was founded in New York in 1976 by Grandmaster Tadashi Nakamura, a highly respected 9th Dan martial artist. Seido Karate is a martial art that focuses on developing confidence, coordination, discipline, and physical and mental fitness through learning self-defence techniques. It is suitable for men, women, and children of all ages and abilities.
The Nelson Dojo, or training hall, is located behind Old St John's Church at 320 Hardy Street. The dojo offers a variety of classes throughout the week, from Tuesday to Saturday. There is an adult beginner class on Tuesdays at 5:30pm, and a Super Kids class for children aged 5-8 on Wednesdays at 4:00pm. In addition to these classes, there are also classes available for older children on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00pm.
The head instructor of the Nelson Dojo is Sei Shihan Aaron Barber, who has a wealth of experience in Seido Karate. Alongside him, there are other senior Black Belts who support and assist in the training sessions. Aaron Barber began his training at the age of eight and became the youngest person at the time to receive his first-degree black belt in both New Zealand and Australia. His family has a long lineage of martial arts practitioners, and he continues to carry on the tradition by dedicating his life to karate.
At Seido Karate Nelson, they offer a free introductory lesson for anyone interested in joining. There is no obligation, and individuals are welcome to come and observe before making a decision. For beginners, there is a “Start up Pack” available, which includes a uniform. The club also organises various events and camps throughout the year, with the upcoming Teapot Valley Camp in 2024.
