Seido Karate Tauranga is a traditional Japanese martial arts club located in Tauranga, New Zealand. The club offers training in Seido karate, a style founded by Kaicho Tadashi Nakamura in 1976. Seido Karate is open to anyone, regardless of age or ability, and has a strong emphasis on personal and individual development.
The objective of Seido Karate is to develop the mind, body, and spirit through the practise of karate techniques and meditation. The training aims to instil a “non-quitting” or "bushido” spirit in each student, allowing them to overcome obstacles and difficulties, both emotional and physical. This emphasis on personal growth is a modern interpretation of the bushido spirit of the samurai.
The name “Seido” translates to 'sincere way' and is based on three principles: love, respect, and obedience. The club's emblem is the plum blossom, which is also the Nakamura family emblem. Through physical training, as well as mental and spiritual focus, Seido Karate assists each student in finding their own non-quitting attitude and encourages them to face challenges without feeling overwhelmed.
Seido Karate Tauranga is led by Sensei Rick Harding, a highly experienced and dedicated instructor. Sensei Rick has been training in Seido Karate since he was a child and has achieved the rank of Shodan (1st Dan). He has won numerous national tournaments for both Kata (form) and Kumite (sparring) and continues to train regularly at dojos across New Zealand and internationally.
The club's timetable includes general classes for all grades, as well as specific classes for higher-ranked students. There is also a conditioning/bag class on Fridays. Seido Karate Tauranga welcomes new members of all levels and backgrounds, providing a supportive and inclusive environment for students to develop their skills.
As a member of Seido Tauranga, students have the opportunity to train at any Seido dojo worldwide, allowing them to continue their practise no matter where they go. Seido Karate is particularly strong in New Zealand, with established bases in Christchurch and Nelson.
