Bronze Medallion is a lifeguarding certification that is the prerequisite for Bronze Cross and National Lifeguard (NL). It teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness.
The Bronze Medallion award teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries, and defence methods and releases in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconscious victims or multiple victims. Lifesavers improve their stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim.
The Bronze Medallion award enjoys a strong reputation. The Lifesaving Society certifies more than 10,000 Canadian lifesavers annually, making Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross two of the Society's most popular certifications. Bronze Medallion was first developed in 1896.
