More appropriate word) were very special to Tom, so it was fitting that when he passed, his partner Christine, along with the Runners’ Club decided on placing a story plaque in his memory at the park. This Annual Club Trophy is awarded at the end of the fourth handicap for the year, and it is based on points earned during that year’s handicaps. TOM'S STORY PLICA 2012 Since the formation of the Shepparton Runners' Club in 1979, members have been able to see the ever-growing nature of the sport in the city. As an example, just five years after its inception, the membership had grown from 25 to 100.
During these early years, the club developed strong links with athletics administrators, as well as other sports clubs in the area. This was important in ensuring the club received assistance with administration, meeting venues, and the provision of a race secretary who looked after the weekly running programmes for the handicaps. Regularly on club race days, members would finish running, then adjourn to a nearby reserve for a barbecue. The club still utilises this venue today, with the barbecue occasionally replaced with softer options during colder winter days to maintain the club's unity.
Today, the club remains committed to promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle for all in a positive and encouraging social environment. With weekly group training sessions catering to runners of all levels, the Shepparton Runners Club actively participates in fun runs, races, and charity events ranging from 5 km to marathon distances. The club welcomes new runners and encourages them to join any of the training runs to gain experience, improve their fitness levels, and become part of the supportive community. Membership options are available for individuals and families, with various packages offering training sessions, coaching tips, social events, and more.
The Shepparton Runners Club extends its gratitude to its sponsors, recognising their contributions not only to the club but to the wider community as well. Overall, the Shepparton Runners Club has a rich history, dating back to its formation in 1979. It has grown and evolved over the years, continuing to thrive and inspire individuals to lead active and healthy lives through running. With a dedicated committee and passionate members, the club strives to maintain its strong sense of camaraderie and constantly improve the fitness and wellbeing of the Goulburn Valley community.
