Located in Calgary, the Silver Springs Outdoor Rink is a beloved community hub that has been providing residents with a place to skate and play for almost 50 years. This free-to-use outdoor rink complex consists of four different rinks of varying sizes, catering to skaters of all ages and skill levels.
Open from around November 15th to March 15th, weather permitting, the rinks are maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers who clean and flood the ice surfaces daily. Nighttime lighting is provided until 11 pm, allowing for evening skating sessions. Additionally, benches, picnic tables, and a port-a-pot are available for skaters' convenience.
Originally constructed in 1975, the rinks have undergone several upgrades over the years, including the addition of hockey boards and other amenities. One of the rinks is dedicated to Canadian National and Olympic Hockey star Hayley Wickenheiser, who spent many hours skating at the rink as a child.
Aside from skating in the winter months, the rink's asphalt bases are utilized as basketball, pickleball, and badminton courts during the summer. Various events and activities are also held at the Silver Springs Community Centre throughout the year, making it a vibrant community space for all to enjoy.
Volunteers play a crucial role in maintaining the rinks and ensuring that they remain a treasured community asset. For those interested in joining the volunteer team, opportunities are available to help build and maintain the rinks each year.
The Silver Springs Outdoor Rink is not just a place to skate, but a community gathering spot where residents can come together to enjoy the outdoors and participate in a variety of events and activities throughout the year.
